Château Latour produces around 18,000 cases of Grand V<strong>in</strong> and Château Margaux 12,500<br />

cases annually, Kanonkop produce around 4,500 cases of their benchmark Paul Sauer red.<br />

8.2.5 Inadequate storage facilities<br />

<strong>W<strong>in</strong>e</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>kers <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> have traditionally never stored their w<strong>in</strong>es. As <strong>in</strong> Europe, the<br />

vast majority of w<strong>in</strong>es are consumed on the day they are bought. The climate has much to<br />

do with this, keep<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>e is difficult for most, only <strong>in</strong> the last few years have cellars been a<br />

reasonable addition to homes under construction and only at the top end of the market.<br />

Successful <strong>in</strong>vestment requires w<strong>in</strong>es held for several years <strong>in</strong> excellent condition, there are<br />

few means of achiev<strong>in</strong>g this.<br />

a) Home storage<br />

Long term storage of w<strong>in</strong>e requires a constant, low temperature, ventilation, absence of light<br />

and vibration and sufficient humidity. The climate <strong>in</strong> most of <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> means that areas<br />

for storage need to be cooled, naturally or mechanically. Most homes would be too hot and<br />

even shaded parts, such as cupboards or garages, would not keep an even temperature<br />

below 18°C. The nature of <strong>in</strong>vestment means that most w<strong>in</strong>es will be held for at least one<br />

year, usually more and serious <strong>in</strong>vestment will require considerable space mak<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

specially designated area for storage essential.<br />

<strong>W<strong>in</strong>e</strong> fridges are commercially available hold<strong>in</strong>g up to 270 bottles under suitable conditions;<br />

constant temperature ( usually adjustable ) shaded and with little movement, but lack of<br />
