Interview with Emile den Dulk<br />

Why is there currently little or no <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> SA w<strong>in</strong>es<br />

There is no w<strong>in</strong>e culture. SA’s w<strong>in</strong>e history is one of control. The KWV did an effective<br />

job of controll<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>e and w<strong>in</strong>e dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> SA. It meant there were no big w<strong>in</strong>eries<br />

( except co-ops, whose w<strong>in</strong>e was variable ) and no real export until 2004. Even now,<br />

three co-ops have some 80% of the market. We have a beer culture.<br />

But no trad<strong>in</strong>g facilities for SA w<strong>in</strong>es<br />

En primeur here could work, only for a handful of w<strong>in</strong>es. We will be do<strong>in</strong>g en primeur<br />

next year on an estate w<strong>in</strong>e, not under the De Toren name. This will be an icon w<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

launched <strong>in</strong>ternationally ( there’s a lack of market here for this sort of w<strong>in</strong>e ). It will<br />

raise our profile abroad and it will take SA w<strong>in</strong>es to another level, rais<strong>in</strong>g the profile of<br />

all SA w<strong>in</strong>es. I don’t resent Parker’s <strong>in</strong>fluence and I’ve <strong>in</strong>vited his SA contributor<br />

( see 8.2.4 ) to taste my w<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> barrel. We need to positively promote our w<strong>in</strong>es on<br />

the world stage and Parker is a way to do this.<br />

What do you feel is an icon w<strong>in</strong>e <br />

An icon w<strong>in</strong>e is determ<strong>in</strong>ed by market<strong>in</strong>g, rat<strong>in</strong>gs and price. To me, an icon w<strong>in</strong>e is<br />

‘made’, not manufactured. It means low yields, manicured v<strong>in</strong>es, hand destemm<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

absolute commitment. SA has no world icon w<strong>in</strong>es; it’s because of little market<strong>in</strong>g<br />

abroad, not enough overseas rat<strong>in</strong>gs and too low a price. Any market<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> key<br />

countries such as the UK has been for the commercial end of the market and has<br />

damaged chances of establish<strong>in</strong>g icon w<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

And what hope is there for future w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />

Difficult. SA w<strong>in</strong>es have no access to distribution channels. SA w<strong>in</strong>es are not big<br />

enough abroad. It will need much better distribution. More capital as well. It takes a<br />

huge amount of capital <strong>in</strong>vestment to take a w<strong>in</strong>e from 92 po<strong>in</strong>ts to 95 po<strong>in</strong>ts. You<br />

might need a separate cellar just to do MLF treatments, for example. Most w<strong>in</strong>eries<br />

don’t have that capital. Figures show that last year w<strong>in</strong>eries had an average turnover<br />

of R40m, but the average w<strong>in</strong>ery only made R200,000 profit.<br />
