1.2 Scope of Assignment<br />
<strong>W<strong>in</strong>e</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment can take the form of purchase, part purchase, ownership of shares <strong>in</strong> a<br />
w<strong>in</strong>e farm or w<strong>in</strong>ery or purchase of w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> order to resell for a profit. This report will exam<strong>in</strong>e<br />
the last of these; the <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e as a product. It will not <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> any<br />
<strong>in</strong>frastructure, grape grow<strong>in</strong>g or w<strong>in</strong>emak<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess. More specifically, this report focuses<br />
on ‘Invest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> SA w<strong>in</strong>es.’<br />
The purpose of this report is to review the history of w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong>ternationally and <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>, exam<strong>in</strong>e the current market and opportunities to <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e, and discuss<br />
possible <strong>in</strong>vestment potential and future trends.<br />
Information and data will be sought from producers, <strong>in</strong>dustry observers, and secondary trade<br />
establishments such as auction houses via <strong>in</strong>terview, research and review.<br />
For the purposes of <strong>in</strong>ternational price and cost purposes, most prices have been converted<br />
<strong>in</strong>to SA Rand. To simplify a fluctuat<strong>in</strong>g exchange rate, a mid price was taken dur<strong>in</strong>g March<br />
2011. All examples were converted at;<br />
R11 = GBP1 (£) R0.9 = HK$1<br />
R10 = €1 R7 = US$1<br />
All w<strong>in</strong>es are based on 75cl content and <strong>in</strong> full cases of 12 bottles.<br />
All prices are estimates and rounded out for ease of comparison.<br />
1.3 Contribution of Assignment<br />
A w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>vestment market <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong> would generate considerable f<strong>in</strong>ancial activity.<br />
With more than $3bn ( R21bn ) realised by trad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e around the world ( Wasserman,<br />
2010; Miles, 2009 ) the potential to be part of that is entic<strong>in</strong>g, creat<strong>in</strong>g jobs, <strong>in</strong>dividual wealth,<br />
new bus<strong>in</strong>esses and revenues for the State. Trad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e could br<strong>in</strong>g direct overseas<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestment and offer <strong>in</strong>dividuals and bus<strong>in</strong>esses opportunities to realise profit and improve<br />
lives. SA w<strong>in</strong>es traded <strong>in</strong>ternationally might act as ambassadors for the country, much as<br />
Napa Valley w<strong>in</strong>es do for California. With tradable icon w<strong>in</strong>es recognised <strong>in</strong> markets around<br />
the world there is an <strong>in</strong>centive for improvements throughout the w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>dustry and familiarity<br />
with ‘brand SA’ boost<strong>in</strong>g sales at all price po<strong>in</strong>ts everywhere.<br />
This report seeks to promote the <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e, especially <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>n w<strong>in</strong>e and<br />
stimulate <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g a trad<strong>in</strong>g market <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>.<br />
