and D, differs by only a few nucleotides. This arbitrary<br />

gene is digested by endonucleases to produce<br />

a DNA fingerprint (B). The similarity between these fingerprints can be calculated using coefficients<br />

<strong>of</strong> similarity to produce a similarity matrix, from which a dendrogram (C) can be calculated through<br />

hierarchical clustering (UPGMA). Two ways <strong>of</strong> representing the dendrogram are shown, (1) slanted,<br />

and (2) rectangular.<br />
