This glossary explains some <strong>of</strong> the commonly used terms within the following report.<br />
ASSET<br />
This is the st<strong>and</strong>ard assessment tool used by youth <strong>of</strong>fending teams to collate in<strong>for</strong>mation on a<br />
<strong>young</strong> person who has come into contact with the criminal justice system. It is intended to<br />
identify a range <strong>of</strong> factors that may have contributed to the <strong>of</strong>fending behaviour <strong>of</strong> the <strong>young</strong><br />
person.<br />
Barnardo’s<br />
Barnardo's is a charity which provides a range <strong>of</strong> support, counselling, fostering, adoption <strong>and</strong><br />
training services <strong>for</strong> more than 100,000 <strong>children</strong>, <strong>young</strong> people <strong>and</strong> their families.<br />
Case supervisor<br />
The case supervisor within an establishment is usually responsible <strong>for</strong> the delivery <strong>and</strong><br />
implementation <strong>of</strong> a <strong>young</strong> person’s training plan by working closely with the <strong>young</strong> person,<br />
youth <strong>of</strong>fending team case manager <strong>and</strong> other relevant people.<br />
Connexions Direct<br />
Connexions is a government initiative that provides in<strong>for</strong>mation, advice <strong>and</strong> support to <strong>young</strong><br />
people between the ages <strong>of</strong> 13 <strong>and</strong> 19 on a range <strong>of</strong> issues, including career planning,<br />
education, training <strong>and</strong> employment 1 .<br />
Detention <strong>and</strong> training order (DTO)<br />
A DTO is a custodial sentence. The length <strong>of</strong> the sentence can be between four months <strong>and</strong><br />
two years. The first half <strong>of</strong> the sentence is spent in custody while the second half is spent in<br />
the community under the supervision <strong>of</strong> the youth <strong>of</strong>fending team (YOT) 2 .<br />
Early release<br />
Young people on DTOs lasting between eight <strong>and</strong> 24 months can be released one or two<br />
months early on an electronic tag. Young people convicted <strong>of</strong> certain <strong>of</strong>fences are excluded<br />
but otherwise presumption is in favour <strong>of</strong> early release unless there are good reasons not to.<br />
For those serving determinate sentences <strong>of</strong> three months <strong>and</strong> less than four years, other than<br />
DTOs, home detention curfew (HDC) may be available 3 .<br />
ETE<br />
Education, training <strong>and</strong> employment.<br />
Family support/liaison worker<br />
Some YOTs <strong>and</strong> establishments have a family support/liaison <strong>of</strong>ficer whose role is to support<br />
<strong>and</strong> develop family relationships.<br />
In<strong>for</strong>mation, advice <strong>and</strong> guidance (IAG)<br />
Some establishments have IAG workers who will provide <strong>young</strong> people with advice <strong>and</strong><br />
guidance on ETE.<br />
