Unit 3: Strategies for Success. The aim of this<br />

unit is to investigate the setting of objectives,<br />

measurement of performance and design of<br />

business strategy.<br />

Topics include: using objectives and strategies,<br />

understanding financial objectives, using financial<br />

data to measure performance, interpreting published<br />

accounts, selecting financial strategies, making<br />

investment decisions, marketing objectives and<br />

strategies, developing and implementing marketing<br />

plans, understanding operational objectives and<br />

strategies, innovation, lean production, HR objectives<br />

and strategies, workforce planning, organisational<br />

structures and effective employer/employee relations.<br />

Unit 4: The Business Environment and Managing<br />

Change. This unit is synoptic and draws upon all<br />

other units. It considers the relationship between<br />

businesses and external factors. It examines how<br />

external factors can impact upon businesses, and<br />

the responses they may take. The unit also examines<br />

a number of themes which are important in the<br />

strategic management of businesses, for example,<br />

leadership and corporate culture. Candidates should<br />

consider how businesses can manage change<br />

successfully.<br />

Business Studies is a broad and interesting subject<br />

which enhances career and university choices.<br />

It fits well in combination with both arts and science<br />

subjects and can open up new areas of interest.<br />

Business Studies is very popular as a university<br />

subject. It is desirable to have at least C grades in<br />

GCSE English and Mathematics to study Business<br />

Studies at A level; Business degree courses can<br />

have higher GCSE Mathematics requirements.<br />
