Home Economics
(Food, Nutrition & Health)
Overview
Food, Nutrition & Health is an exciting new
specification focusing on the inter-relationship
between the diet and health. Pupils who studied
Food & Nutrition at GCSE will be able to develop
their interest at a higher level through this course.
However no prior knowledge of Food & Nutrition is
required as the specifications build on, but do not
depend on, the knowledge, understanding and skills
specified for GCSE Home Economics.
Approach
There is strong practical element running throughout
the course and you can expect to undertake practical
work on a weekly basis at both AS and A2 level. This
may take a variety forms; from the acquisition of
skills in the production of food products, to practical
work of an investigative nature. You will develop a
wide range of practical skills and methodology that
you will be able to utilise in your A2 coursework
project. Through practical work, you will develop a
better understanding of the function of ingredients
and food science.
The range of subject matter studied at both AS and
A2 is extensive and ranges from a focus on society
and health, including human needs, environmental
issues and demography; through to resource
management, nutrition, food safety and hygiene, the
design and the development of new food products
and new developments in the food industry.
At A2 there is a strong coursework element of an
investigative nature, in which pupils are able to select
their own area of study from the specification. Pupils
will be expected produce a 3,000 word document to
support their findings.
