Religious Studies<br />
Course outline<br />
The AS consists of two units:<br />
Unit 1: Where essay questions will be answered on<br />
the Philosophy of Religion and Ethics.<br />
Topics include: the Design and Cosmological<br />
arguments; the Problems of Evil and Miracles,<br />
Utilitarianism, Situation Ethics, Sexual Ethics and<br />
War and Peace.<br />
Unit 2: Considers Medical Ethics.<br />
Throughout the year pupils will be required to:<br />
• Describe<br />
• Examine<br />
• Identify<br />
• Outline<br />
• Select<br />
• How and Why<br />
• Ask what<br />
• Illustrate<br />
The A2 course consists of two further units:<br />
Unit 3: Developments is assessed through three<br />
questions on topics including: Religious experience;<br />
The Ontological Argument; Arguments for the<br />
Non-existence of God; Arguments for life after<br />
death; The study of religious language.<br />
Ethical studies include: Deontology; Natural moral<br />
law; Virtue ethics; The ‘is/ought’ debate and debates<br />
about ‘good’; Emotivism; Objectivity; Relativism;<br />
Subjectivism; Justice; Law and Punishment. Pupils<br />
will need to justify, evaluate and interpret opinions.<br />
Unit 4: Implications requires pupils to answer one<br />
question in 1 1 /4 hours from a choice of nine topics in<br />
June. Questions are based on an anthology published<br />
by Edexcel.<br />
Topics include: Religious Language and Religious<br />
Experience and the emergence of Modern Philosophy<br />
of Religion.<br />

A minimum of grade C in English Language at GCSE<br />
is essential and a grade B is desirable.<br />
