English Literature
In your AS year you will study for two units:
1. Explorations in Prose and Poetry: Focusing on
the author’s craft in two novels and one collection of
poetry, as well as unseen prose and poetry. This is
examined in a 2 hour 15 minute paper.
2. Explorations in Drama: A coursework module
consisting of a critical essay comparing two texts,
one Shakespeare and one other. The unit also
involves the writing of a brief creative-critical piece,
such as a review of a production.
In your A2 year you will extend your study of
literature by increasing specialism and exploring a
range of critical perspectives. A further two units
will be taken:
1. Interpretations of Prose and Poetry: Focusing
on the study of three texts, including at least one
published after 1990 and both prose and poetry.
2. Reflections in Literary Studies: A coursework
module consisting of one extended piece or two
essay responses to texts, which develop your
critical ideas and independent study skills.
Further information
English Literature combines well with subjects like
History, Philosophy, Languages, Economics, and
reading and exploring texts and is a good basis for
many subjects at degree level. For example, arts
subjects, Law, Drama and American Studies.
You will need to have at least a grade B in English
Language and English Literature, but a grade A is
highly desirable for those who wish to achieve
grade C or above at A level.
The specification numbers are:
8ET01 (AS); 9ET01 (A2)
