Product Design Unit 4: Coursework. • Approximately 60 hours of work worth 30% of A level: • Candidates choose a project to undertake and submit a single substantial design and make activity – the end result being a portfolio and a 3D product. • Key skills throughout include: research, analysis, problem solving, ICT, imaginative ideas, good presentation, modelling and making suitable outcomes, communicating, and evaluation. Some experience in a design based GCSE subject is highly desirable, plus evidence of a strong design folio. Grade B and above in GCSE Product Design is desirable. Art/Textiles portfolios will be considered. Subjects that combine well with Product Design include: Photography, Maths, Physics, Business Studies, Physical Education and BTEC Art & Design. Psychology Overview AS/A2 Psychology is most valuable to pupils because it allows us to confront and examine our intuitions and beliefs objectively. This involves testing stereotypes and questioning our understanding of people’s behaviour, as individuals or in groups. Throughout the course, the focus is on application of the Methods of Research in psychology and an appreciation of the code of ethics employed by the British Psychological Society. Approach We adopt a suitably structured approach to AS level Psychology, as pupils have rarely encountered the subject before. We find the use of structured materials that guide learning and give pointers to wider accessible reading materials and on-line websites are essential in laying down the foundations of the subject in this first year. Together with class practical experiments and case histories, interpreted in the light of key theories, these assist pupils to further develop their individual and group working skills. The first part of the A2 level year builds on the sound foundation of knowledge and research techniques from AS level by applying these principles to real-life and everyday scenarios, such as child development, cognition & law and forensic psychology. Teaching incorporates a variety of multimedia solutions and practical experiments. The latter half of the A2 level involves debates about the effectiveness of the different perspectives adopted by psychologists in studying human behaviour, including such philosophical implications as having free will to make choices. The focus is on developing skills in building arguments with knowledge gained over the whole course. Although there is no coursework, and no continuous assessment during the course that contributes towards the final grade, every opportunity to recreate key experiments is taken in order to develop an appreciation for practical skills. External assessment is split between short answer and essay based questions, along with problem solving questions on the use of research methodology. Course outline AS level: Units 1 & 2; 90 minute papers of 60 marks each. A2 level: Units 3 & 4; 120 minute papers of 60 marks each. AS Unit 1: Introducing Psychology. Key Approaches is a brief foray into the historical context of psychology, including the work of prominent psychologists such as Sigmund Freud, B F Skinner and Carl Rogers. Biopsychology is an introduction to the biological structures and chemical activity that underlie behaviour, and the techniques that are used to investigate brain function. In Gender, cultural stereotypes and thoughtprovoking case studies are confronted to guide an investigation of how psychology uses evidence to test theories and evaluate a range of theories about personality development. At the heart of this unit is the challenging question of how much of our behaviour is determined by nature and how much by nurture. Unit 2: Social Psychology, Cognitive Psychology & Individual Differences. The topic of Social Psychology explores how irrational bias can influence our impression of others, and includes investigation of prejudice and discrimination.
