Music Technology<br />

(BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma)<br />

In practical recording projects the performers are<br />

often the other pupils in the class so there is a lot of<br />

opportunity for rewarding and enjoyable work together.<br />

ICT is used extensively in the delivery of the course<br />

and all musical work is done using technology.<br />

Course outline<br />

The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Music<br />

Technology is a two year course equivalent to an<br />

A level, although it is possible to achieve a BTEC<br />

Certificate, equivalent to an AS Level, after only one<br />

year of study. In this course there will be six units<br />

taught over the two years:<br />

To do well at Music Technology it is necessary to<br />

have some understanding of and interest in music.<br />

It is helpful to be able to play an instrument or sing,<br />

as well as being willing to take part in class based<br />

performance and recording. An understanding of<br />

music to the equivalent of at least grade C at GCSE<br />

is desirable. Those who don’t have this qualification<br />

can be assessed individually.<br />

The exam studied is the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary<br />

Diploma in Music Technology (Production).<br />

1. Music Production Techniques<br />

Use of the studio, basic recording and<br />

production techniques, recording live sound,<br />

editing, effects and other key skills.<br />

2. Sequencing Systems and Techniques<br />

Using Logic on the Mac to create music in<br />

a variety of styles.<br />

3. Listening Skills for Music Technologists<br />

Listening to your own and others’ work to<br />

identify key features, faults, balance and mix.<br />

Essential techniques which you will use in every<br />

element of the course.<br />

4. Delivering a Music Product<br />

This is an extension of the recording and<br />

production work done in the Lower Sixth. Here<br />

you will finish your recordings to a professional<br />

standard, transfer to CD or internet based formats.<br />

Working in teams, you will gain experience in a<br />

variety of roles in the music industry.<br />

5. Marketing and Promotion in the<br />

Music Industry<br />

A practical introduction to these essential<br />

techniques that will focus on a real event at<br />

school which you will have the responsibility for.<br />
