Japanese, by having their oil supply cut off and their economy throttled by the
embargoes of the U.S. and Britain, were effectively backed into a corner. To
further add fuel to the fire, in July 1941, the U.S. government froze all Japanese
assets and finances located in the U.S. 10 The U.S. military had also successfully
cracked the Japanese military and diplomatic codes (Japanese Navy JN-25,
MAGIC and PURPLE) with a high degree of success, 11 and were able intercept
and decipher the transmissions of diplomatic and military plans. 12 In his
