buckle <strong>and</strong> sag dramatically. Large shards of w<strong>in</strong>dow glass fell from the facade,<br />
cutt<strong>in</strong>g through fire hoses on the ground around the build<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> fire would not<br />
yield <strong>and</strong> there were <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g concerns about the stability of the structure. Fire<br />
officials called off the attack <strong>and</strong> allowed the fire to "free burn," concentrat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
their efforts on conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the fire to this build<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g did not collapse<br />
<strong>and</strong> was eventually repaired. 35<br />
<strong>The</strong> 1988 First Interstate Bank Build<strong>in</strong>g Fire,<br />
Los Angeles, CA. On May 4, 1988 a fire broke out <strong>in</strong><br />
the First Interstate Bank build<strong>in</strong>g that was called the<br />
worst high-rise fire <strong>in</strong> Los Angeles history. 36 <strong>The</strong><br />
build<strong>in</strong>g has a structural steel frame, applied thermal<br />
<strong>in</strong>sulation <strong>and</strong> heat retardants. Steel floor plans with<br />
light-weight concrete were also <strong>in</strong> the design. <strong>The</strong><br />
aggressive fire raged for 3½ hours <strong>and</strong> gutted <strong>and</strong><br />
burned through 4 floors of the 64 floor tower. <strong>The</strong>re was<br />

similar to the WTC complex, open-plan office space. <strong>The</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g was repaired<br />
<strong>and</strong> reoccupied months later.<br />
<strong>The</strong> 1975 World Trade Center, North Tower Fire, New York, NY.<br />
Unknown to most people, <strong>and</strong> apparently <strong>in</strong>tentionally kept quiet by the<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>stream media, on February 13, 1975, the World Trade Center North Tower<br />
suffered a serious <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>tense fire that lasted nearly 3.5 hours <strong>and</strong> was classified<br />
as a 3-alarm fire. 38 <strong>The</strong> fire destroyed the <strong>11</strong>th floor <strong>and</strong> spread to several other<br />
floors, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g areas <strong>in</strong> the central core. <strong>The</strong> fire broke w<strong>in</strong>dows out, <strong>and</strong> were<br />
seen pour<strong>in</strong>g out of the w<strong>in</strong>dows of the <strong>11</strong>th east side floor, which is <strong>in</strong>dicative of
