however, President Johnson went before the American people <strong>in</strong>terrupt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
broadcast television <strong>and</strong> announced the attacks as genu<strong>in</strong>e, despite hav<strong>in</strong>g been<br />
advised just half an hour before the national broadcast that there were<br />
substantial doubts as to the Aug. 4th attacks with several contradictory<br />
statements <strong>and</strong> flimsy evidence. <strong>The</strong>se “attacks” formed the justification for<br />
Johnson to brazenly request the Gulf of Tonk<strong>in</strong> Resolution. <strong>The</strong> Congress was<br />
implicitly threatened with be<strong>in</strong>g labeled anti-patriotic, they were stampeded <strong>in</strong>to<br />
respond<strong>in</strong>g to Johnson’s live late-night televised announcement by deliver<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
the president a blank check authoriz<strong>in</strong>g the buildup of troops, previously <strong>and</strong><br />
expeditiously termed “advisors,” <strong>and</strong> escalated the conflict. For the first time <strong>in</strong><br />
American history, U.S. troops were engaged <strong>in</strong> a war without the formal<br />
constitutionally required declaration of war. Years later, additional recorded<br />
conversations between Johnson <strong>and</strong> McNamara emerged from the Johnson<br />
Library that <strong>in</strong>dicated that Johnson was particularly angry at McNamara. In a<br />
secret record<strong>in</strong>g Johnson berated Robert McNamara, his Defense Secretary, for<br />
mislead<strong>in</strong>g him. "You said: 'Damn, they are launch<strong>in</strong>g an attack on us, they are<br />
fir<strong>in</strong>g on us.' When we got through with all the fir<strong>in</strong>g, we concluded maybe they<br />
hadn't fired at all." 31 <strong>The</strong>se arrogant men, walk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> counsel with no one but<br />
themselves <strong>and</strong> pre-committed to escalat<strong>in</strong>g the Vietnam beyond small low<strong>in</strong>tensity<br />
guerillas skirmishes, took the nation to war, <strong>and</strong> 58,000 servicemen to<br />
their deaths on scant <strong>and</strong> exaggerated evidence.<br />
With this fait accompli the Vietnam War began <strong>and</strong> was then waged <strong>and</strong><br />
escalated through to the Nixon Adm<strong>in</strong>istration. Numerous social repercussions<br />
followed, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the polarization of the country, demoralization, fem<strong>in</strong>ism <strong>and</strong><br />
the decl<strong>in</strong>e of the traditional nuclear family, the sexual revolution, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
massive <strong>in</strong>crease of drugs be<strong>in</strong>g imported <strong>in</strong>to America. It was a goldm<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> an<br />
open bank vault for the Military Industrial Complex <strong>in</strong> defense contracts,<br />
weapons development, <strong>and</strong> open test<strong>in</strong>g on the battlefields <strong>and</strong> jungles of<br />
Vietnam. In total, the Vietnam War cost the needless sacrifice of 58,226 U.S.<br />
soldiers killed <strong>and</strong> 153,303 casualties suffered (<strong>and</strong> up to 1 million Vietnamese<br />
