A Note from the Director on Sociolinguistic Surveys on Chiyao, Chitumbuka, Chilomwe and Chisena It has been established on the basis of empirical evidence from research that Children learn better in their mother tongue and that mother tongue education, at least in the <strong>for</strong>mative years of the child’s education, is the most optimal alternative. However, the <strong>for</strong>mulation of a meaningful language policy with emphasis on mother tongue education in a multilingual country like Malawi crucially depends on the availability of accurate and realiable sociollinguistic data. 5
