Turkey Representative Cenk Pala states that
one of the most sensitive factors in energy
security will be the natural gas. He says,
“Previously European countries had not
really understood why Caspian,
Turkmenistan, Iraq and Iran’s gas reserves
are important because somehow gas was
coming from Russia, Norway and Algeria
and everybody was happy. However, they
learned that gas can be used as a weapon in
foreign affairs.” Europe has not forgotten
the interruption in the gas flow from Russia
through Ukraine due to the crises between
Ukraine and Russia in 2008-2009. Thus,
energy supply security has become the most
important article in the “Energy Union
Package” announced by the European
Commission last February.

TANAP ON THE AGENDA OF THE ENERGY
UNION
TANAP is highly important for ensuring
natural gas supply security, resource diversification
and sustainable energy supply. In
this sense, TANAP will make Caspian,
Turkey and Europe even closer to each
other. Maros Sefcovic, European
Commission Vice President for the Energy
Union, says that TANAP and Southern Gas
Corridor projects are very critical for the
European Union as they will safely meet the
energy need of EU. Before the Southern Gas
Corridor, which is the most concrete step
for delivering gas from Caspian to Europe,
there were other projects like Nabucco.
However, Europe did not take the necessary
steps and delayed the delivery of natural gas
from the Caspian and the surrounding
areas. Europe must be aware of this delay as
Sefcovic says, “As the European
Commission, once again we underline our
commitment to the project.” On the other
hand, Sefcovic states that EU has three
main objectives and energy supply security
