INTRODUCTION<br />

ever, requisite that we should not follow the exhortations of<br />

those who say that man should be wise in human, and a mortal<br />

in mortal concerns, but we should endeavour as much as<br />

possible to immortalize ourselves, and to do every thing which<br />

may contribute to a life according to our most excellent part.<br />

For this, though it is small in bulk, yet far transcends all the<br />

other parts in power and dignity." After this, he shows that<br />

intellect is the true man, from its being that which is most<br />

powerful, principal, and excellent in our nature; "so that,"<br />

says he, "it would be absurd not to choose that which is our<br />

proper life, but that which belongs to something different from<br />

ourselves."<br />

Ridiculus, therefore, as well as grovelling are those conceptions<br />

which lead men to value knowledge so far only as it contributes<br />

to the necessities, the comforts, and the refinements<br />

of the merely human life; and partial and unscientific is that<br />

definition of virtue, which makes its highest energies to be<br />

those of morality: for moral virtue is more human, but intellectual<br />

more divine. The former is preparatory to felicity;<br />

but the latter, when perfect, is accompanied with perfect<br />

beatitude. Virtuous, therefore, is the man who relieves the<br />

corporeal wants of others, who wipes away the tear of sorrow,<br />

and gives agony repose; but more virtuous he, who, by disseminating<br />

wisdom, expels ignorance from the soul, and thus<br />

benefits the immortal part of man. For it may indeed be truly<br />

said, that he who has not even a knowledge of common things<br />

is a brute among men; that he who has an accurate knowledge<br />

of human concerns alone, is a man among brutcs; but, that<br />

he who knows all that can be known by intellectual energy,<br />

is a God among men. *<br />

or more than one, who greatly surpasses in virtue, though not sufficiently numerous<br />
