unable to benefit from traditional outpatient treatment. <strong>The</strong> program makes use of a<br />

consistent treatment team to provide comprehensive assessment, case management,<br />

individual and family treatment and crisis intervention.<br />

IRS – Initial Risk Screening – An abbreviated risk assessment instrument used by<br />

<strong>Juvenile</strong> Probation Officers in all non-judicial and first time offender judicial cases to<br />

identify low-risk juveniles for special handling.<br />

JAG – <strong>Juvenile</strong> Assessment Generic – A formalized assessment instrument used by<br />

<strong>Juvenile</strong> Probation Officers that identifies and addresses a juveniles “criminogenic<br />

needs,” measures “protective factors” and arrives at an overall score that assesses the<br />

juvenile’s likelihood of recidivating.<br />

JPO – <strong>Juvenile</strong> Probation Officer – A Judicial Branch employee whose duties include<br />

administering various risk assessment instruments preparing studies for the court and<br />

supervising juveniles under the court’s jurisdiction.<br />

MDFT – Multi Dimensional Family <strong>The</strong>rapy – MDFT is an intensive outpatient<br />

family-based treatment system for adolescent substance abuse and related problems. It<br />

focuses on changing current problem behaviors and the thoughts that perpetuate them.<br />

However, MDFT also addresses the past recollections and how the past impacts the<br />

current negative emotions and problem behaviors.<br />

MST – Multi Systemic <strong>The</strong>rapy – An evidence-based, intensive, home and familycentered<br />

program for chronically violent or substance-abusing post-dispositional children<br />

classified at a very high and high risk of recidivating. This service utilizes cognitive<br />

behavior therapy and is contracted by both DCF and CSSD.<br />

YIC – Youth in Crisis – a person sixteen to seventeen years of age who, has without just<br />

cause run away from the parental home or other properly authorized and lawful place of<br />

abode, is beyond the control of parents, guardian or other custodian, or has four<br />

unexcused absences from school in any one month or ten unexcused absences in any<br />

school year. It is anticipated that this classification will be eliminated and these youth<br />

will become <strong>FWSN</strong> children in 2010 when the age of juvenile court jurisdiction is<br />

increased to 18.<br />
