Hammond, of Nairn Avenue, Chaddesden, was caught with the images after he subscribed by credit card to an
American website called Landslide Productions.
When U.S. authorities closed down the website in 1999 they passed on Hammond's details, along with those of
thousands of other subscribers, to UK police.
Hammond was convicted at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on February 15 this year for 15 offences of
making indecent photographs of children and six offences of possession of indecent photographs of children.
John Wood, prosecuting, told yesterday's hearing that police searched Hammond's home in June 2003 and seized
two computers and stacks of computer discs.
"When first interviewed he said he had been looking for adult porn and accessed the child porn sites by mistake,"
said Mr Wood.
"However, when interviewed again by Derbyshire police he admitted he had been downloading child porn for a
number of years.
"He said some images were on his computer and others were on discs, the most serious of which had been disguised
as a wall clock hanging in his house."
Hammond told police he viewed the child porn for artistic purposes, as he claimed some of the children were in
"glamorous" poses.
He also said he needed the images to allow him to successfully restore old photos by matching faces from a
database, Mr Wood said.
Olivia Chaffin-Haird, mitigating, said Hammond had stored thousands of other images on his computer for work
purposes.
She said: "Now he understands the pictures are inappropriate and that he may have been naive to access this type of
site.
"There is no evidence that he distributed these images and he is genuinely apologetic and ashamed of his behaviour.
"He has the full support of his employer and is highly regarded in his work. His wife has also stood by him through
this."
Sentencing Hammond to six months' imprisonment and placing him on the sex offenders' register for seven years,
Judge David Price told him: "You had over 12,000 images, some of which were of the most serious kind and
undoubtedly encourage abuse of children.
"The sheer number of images gives me cause for concern, which is why a custodial sentence is the only appropriate
outcome."
WW Winter, based in Midland Road, Derby, declined to comment after the case.
