A TEACHER caught distributing child pornography during a national crackdown on internet pedophilia walked free
from a Perth court yesterday.
Alan John Vella, 24, was told by a judge at Western Australia's District Court he was very lucky to be given a
suspended prison term after pleading guilty to charges of distributing and possessing child pornography.
Vella, a teacher for three years at St Brigid's Primary School in the Perth suburb of Middle Swan, was one of the
717 Australians, including 70 West Australians, targeted in the international child porn crackdown dubbed
Operation Auxin last year.
Described in court as "sexually naive", Vella was said to have subscribed and renewed a membership to a child
pornography website, downloading 30 images of children as young as nine engaged in sex acts with other children.
Vella also distributed some of the images to a number of other people via an internet chatroom, the court heard.
Judge Shauna Deane said in her sentencing remarks she could not understand why a teacher, who was supposed to
have the interests of children at heart, would want to view such images.
"It is difficult to understand how you could stoop to behaving in this way," Judge Deane said.
Vella received a 14-month prison sentence for the distribution charge and concurrent six-month sentences for each
possession charge making a total of 20 months.
Judge Deane suspended the sentence for two years after taking into consideration the relatively small number of
images collected and what she said was Vella's low risk of re-offending.
"You are very fortunate not to be going to prison today," Judge Deane said.
Vella has been sacked from his position at the school.

Trials set in child porn, attempted murder case.
A 41-year-old Homosassa man was sentenced to 15 years in prison Thursday for molesting two children from
Dunnellon.
James Scott Perry pleaded guilty to 11 counts he faced, including sexual battery, lewd and lascivious molestation
and pornography possession. He was arrested in April 2004 after Citrus County Sheriff's investigators say he
performed sex acts on an 8-year-old girl.
During a taped interview with investigators, the girl indicated her 5-year-old brother was also involved.
