Ex-teacher pleads guilty to child porn

His voice at times barely a whisper, a former sixth-grade teacher in Clay County pleaded guilty Wednesday to
transporting child pornography over the Internet.
John E. McIntyre, 40, faces five to 20 years in prison after a pre-sentence investigation is completed. U.S.
Magistrate Marcia Morales Howard said that could take two to three months. He remains free on $50,000 bail.
Prosecutors agreed to ask for a sentence at the low end of that range because of his cooperation. They dropped two
other counts alleging McIntyre transported and possessed child pornography.
"The defendant admitted, in essence, that he traded with his computer over the Internet images of young children
engaged in sexual activity," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald Henry.
McIntyre, who taught at Tynes Elementary School in Middleburg, was arrested in August at his home near Orange
Park. There was no evidence any of the photographs he sent to an undercover FBI agent or had on his computer
involved his students, though an FBI agent said McIntyre discussed fantasizing about some of his students.
Henry said McIntyre was arrested after an FBI agent in Buffalo, N.Y., working undercover in an America Online
chat room last June, observed a message from McIntyre that read "trading young boys." The agent initiated an
instant messaging session with McIntyre that resulted in the teacher e-mailing him files containing pictures of
prepubescent boys engaged in various sex acts with adult males.
The FBI identified McIntyre by his screen name and arrived at his home with a search warrant in August. Henry
said McIntyre admitted to agents at his home that he used his computer to send and receive digital photographs of
child pornography.
McIntyre declined comment Wednesday through his lawyer. He had taught in Clay County schools since 1988 and
had been at Tynes since it opened in 1994. He also was a youth basketball coach for the YMCA.
McIntyre's brother, Walter, was arrested in 2002 for possessing child pornography on his computer at the JEA
power plant where he worked. He received two years' house arrest and two years' probation. But the law has
changed since then and now requires a five-year minimum prison sentence, said Robert Willis, John McIntyre's
attorney.

The federal prosecution of Bruce Wernick began yesterday in a Central Islip courtroom with a list of names.
Four-year-old Jennifer from Dix Hills. Seven-year-old Heather from Texas. Eight-year-old Helen from England.
These are just a few of the sexually-abused children whose images investigators found on Wernick's computers in
September 2001, prosecutor Lara Treinis Gatz said in her opening statement to the jury. Wernick, she said,
"collected and methodically catalogued an extensive library of porn."
Wernick, 47, of Valley Stream, is charged with possessing, producing and distributing child pornography, as well as
using a computer to target, then sodomize three Suffolk teenage boys between December 1999 and September 2001.
"He hunted for vulnerable teenage boys who he could persuade to meet," Gatz said.
But Wernick's attorney, Bruce Barket of Garden City, said his client is innocent and urged the jury not to be swayed
