Last week, federal authorities arrested a Gates man, 20-year-old Richard Petix, who they allege communicated
online with an FBI special agent working out of Buffalo. Petix, authorities allege, agreed to allow the agent, who
was operating undercover, access to a computer cache of child pornography images.
Petix used the online nickname "Pervert1," the FBI alleges. He admitted that he had hundreds of child pornography
photos and videos, the FBI alleges.
'Monster in your home'
There is no debate over the hazards of the travelers, since they often seek to meet youths in person. But not every
man who strikes up an online relationship with a teenager is a would-be traveler; some simply find a perverse
fulfillment in the conversation.
The FBI special agents are adept at weeding out the talkers or those who simply chat with youths but likely won't
commit a crime from the travelers. The men who quickly launch into sexually oriented chat are the least likely to set
up a meeting, FBI agents say.
"It's almost counterintuitive," Hubert said. But, she said, the men who want to go beyond talk are "plotting,
methodical."
These men are mannerly and often provide an outlet for vulnerable youths. The teens or preteens find comfort in the
conversations, which may stretch on with occasional online chats for weeks or longer. The youths often develop a
fondness for the adults.
Some traveler criminal cases take weeks to develop. Others don't.
In one case, a female Buffalo Police Department officer, who works with the Cyber Task Force, pretended to be a
14-year-old boy online. She or "he" met a Buffalo man online, and the man invited the teen to his home.
The FBI dressed a youthful male agent in appropriate teen clothing, put a knapsack on his back, sent him to the
address, and made the arrest.
"The entire case was made in 45 minutes," Hubert said.
In another case, the Buffalo office dressed one of its younger female agents in a Catholic school uniform to meet a
man at a restaurant who'd admitted in an online conversation that he had a fetish for the attire. He also ended up
being arrested.
FBI spokesman Paul Moskal, speaking from Buffalo, said he recalls that he was warned as a child to stay away from
parks after dark.
"Now the monster is in your home," Moskal said.

Sacramento (AP) - A convicted pedophile pleaded guilty Monday to traveling to Reno, Nev., to engage in sex with a
14-year-old girl he met through a telephone chat service.
Michael Stephen Dahl, 49, of Sacramento, already was on federal probation for a July 2000 conviction in south
Texas for a similar conviction of traveling with intent to engage in a sexual act with a juvenile. He spent 15 months
in federal prison on that conviction.
Dahl now faces five to 30 years in federal prison at his July 14 sentencing.
