Two adults take the microphone and talk about the abuse they suffered as children. They're examples it has been
going on for decades.
The man, now in his 30s, had been raped in a foster home and ran away. He was 10 years old when he was picked
up while hitchhiking and taken to California, where he became part of a child prostitution ring. He later did time
back in Iowa for killing a man in a bar fight. He thanked the prison counselors in the room for helping him turn
things around.
The woman's abuse started when she was 3 years old and lasted into her teens. She's in her 50s now, and
professionally successful. She does all she can to help others deal with the trauma.
The woman confesses she will never completely be OK, because victims of child sex abuse serve a life sentence of
sorts. They'll never forget.
It does not mean their lives are forever destroyed.
It's a matter of a child - even an adult - understanding that the terrible thing that happened is not their fault, that they
didn't do anything wrong, that they shouldn't be ashamed, that they're good people too.
Sarah, who comes back into the room as the program ends, seems to understand.
"Congratulations," a visitor at the meeting tells her. "You're a very nice girl. And very brave."
"Thank you very much," she says.
She's smiling. Her blue eyes are sparkling. She and her mom are going for ice cream.

Gallop backs cancellation of paedophiles' passports

Western Australian Premier Geoff Gallop has backed a proposal by a national child welfare group for convicted
paedophiles to have their passports confiscated.
The Federal Government yesterday revealed a number of men listed on the national child sex offender data base
tried to prey on children in areas affected by the Asian tsunamis.
However, authorities stopped them entering those countries.
Bernadette McMenamin, who is the director of Child Wise, says the register does not stop paedophiles travelling
overseas and the Federal Government should cancel their passports.
"The world is a very big place for these individuals and if we're pushing them out of our institutions in Australia we
are pushing them over to very vulnerable communities overseas," she said.
"Removing passports is a very sensible option."
Dr Gallop says he would support any move that would stop sex offenders preying on young children here or
overseas.
"The Federal Government should closely monitor the activities of those that would wish to go overseas to prey on
young people," he said.
"If they're engaged in illegal activities they should be brought to justice and if those activities need to be constrained
