to authorities Friday and was allowed to be released without bond, according to court records.
Prosecutor: Case a warning to others
Helmer said it appeared Smith had been involved with downloading and distributing child pornographic pictures for
several years. He said Wednesday's plea was a warning to others.
"We will find you," Helmer said.
According to the plea, the investigation began in Germany in November 2003 when authorities there executed a
search warrant on a man suspected of trafficking in child pornography over the Internet. As part of that
investigation, authorities found that Smith had received images of child pornography from the man.
The Smith investigation is part of a U.S. probe known as Operation Predator, which began in 1997. It has resulted in
more than 5,300 arrests worldwide since 2003, said Manny Van Pelt, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and
Customs Enforcement, which oversees the investigation.
Those charged in previous cases have included doctors, police officers, teachers, camp counselors and coaches, he
said.

A female teacher from Luton's Halyard High School has been suspended accused of having sex with an under age
pupil.
Police arrested and bailed the teacher after the teenager made a statement to family protection officers about the
relationship, which allegedly started when he was 15.
The boy's father has criticised the school's handling of the case, accusing it of trying to sweep the matter under the
carpet.
He said Halyard only suspended the teacher after he complained she was still teaching three school days later. The
dad also claimed the school failed to act on an anonymous phone call, which he discovered had informed police
about the alleged relationship a month earlier.
He said: "I want to make sure they are investigating things properly for our benefit and for other parents.
"It's the second situation at the school and it seems like they are trying to hide this one because it's the last thing they
want."
Former Halyard assistant headteacher Paul Douglas, 38, was sentenced to 15 months in jail for child pornography
offences at Luton Crown Court earlier this month.
Police this week confirmed a Halyard teacher had been arrested and an investigation was under way, with support
from specialist family protection officers.
Luton Council spokeswoman Lisa Levy said: "It's not our usual policy to comment on individual members of staff.
"However, we can confirm a teacher working at Halyard High School has been suspended pending a police
investigation.
"We are unable to make any further comments until the investigation is complete."
