Former police officer sentenced on child porn charges

A former Griffin police officer stood in federal court Friday and asked for help with an Internet porn addiction
before being sentenced to 57 months for possessing digital sexual images of children.
"I don't want to minimize what I did," David Paul Erdman told Judge Jack T. Camp. "I got addicted to the Internet
and got carried away. I've got a problem and I need help."
But federal prosecutors said Erdman's sexual behavior toward children was escalating and could have led to
abduction or physical harm.
While awaiting sentencing on the federal charges, Erdman was arrested in Henry County Nov. 28 for exposing
himself to a 9-year-old girl and her grandmother inside a store.
"He goes from bragging about being a police officer and wanting to have sex with young girls to exposing himself
over a Web cam," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Angela Jordan. "He exposes himself in person to a 9-year-old girl.
His behavior is escalating. What if he decides next to kidnap that child?"
Erdman's attorney, Howard Jarrett Weintraub, agreed that his client has a problem and got Camp's approval for
Erdman's participation in a sex offender program while in federal custody.
After release, Erdman will be supervised for five years.
Erdman still faces child molestation and public indecency charges in Henry County and is scheduled to be arraigned
May 3. Weintraub said Erdman will plead guilty to the Henry charges.
Erdman was indicted on the federal charges Feb. 11, 2004, after being caught in an FBI Internet sting operation.
Using the screen name "dadcaughtwatchingporn," Erdman thought he was communicating with a 15-year-old girl,
not an undercover FBI agent based in Chicago.

Our View
As the tragedy that befalls too many children hit home in Iowa last week with the abduction, sexual assault and
murder of 10-year-old Jetseta Gage of Cedar Rapids, some of the reactions were typical and not unexpected. One
example of that emotional reaction was state Rep. James Van Fossens call for reinstatement of the death penalty.
Taking that action might quench a thirst for vengeance, but would do little to protect other children from pedophiles.
With only a few weeks remaining until the legislative session ends, its unlikely any proposal to restore capital
punishment will go anywhere this year. There are, however, things the Legislature can and should do to protect
Iowas most vulnerable citizens. Lengthen the sentences of convicted child molesters. Require them to complete sexoffender
treatment before they are released, even if they were good in prison and eligible for early release under the
Iowa Department of Corrections good time provisions. Once they are released, require them to wear electronic
monitoring devices.
