develop into sexual relationships," Judge Bright said.
The 35-year-old, of Craigmore, pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault and five counts of unlawful sexual
intercourse by a school master.
Slater met his victims, both students of his at a Riverland high school, in 2002. He has since resigned from teaching.
Their games of "truth or dare" and his questions about sex gave way to flirting text messages and sexual intercourse.
The first victim was indecently assaulted on Valentine's Day 2003. They had sex on a couch in his house. He bought
the second victim $60 credit for her mobile telephone and said she could "work it off", eventually having sex with
her four times. When the relationships ended, Slater used text messages to urge the girls to keep silent.
John Lister, for Slater, said his client had lived a "self-imposed exile" since pleading guilty to the offences and had
sought professional treatment.
"In objective terms, (the offences have) ruined the career of a relatively young man . . . he will never again be able
to work in the education system in any capacity," Mr Lister said.
"He fully acknowledges it was his fault and he regrets what happened . . . he has asked me to express publicly his
apologies to (the girls) concerned."
Judge Bright, however, said jail was the only appropriate punishment for Slater "despite those considerations". "I
accept it was because of that depression that you permitted yourself to do things which you obviously knew you
should not have done.
"The court must make it plain to others who would be likely to offend in the same way that such conduct will be met
with severe punishment."
He sentenced Slater to six years' jail, with a 3 1/2 year non-parole period.

Jessica Lunsford was stolen from her own bedroom by a sexual predator who had been arrested 24 times before. I
think he is the scum of the earth. John Evander Couey deserves death with no chance of appeal. He reportedly has
admitted that he committed this brutal crime against this beautiful little girls.
But there are others I consider criminally culpable, as well. The three, including Couey's half-sister Dorothy Dixon,
who have been arrested deserve just punishment, as well. We must have justice.
There are others in suits and ties and perhaps black robes who share in the guilt for Jessica's murder. The parole
boards and judges who allowed this predator to roam the night in search of helpless children to attack are
responsible.
According to all the information I have, a pedophile can never be rehabilitated. Surely judges and parole boards
know this if the ordinary citizen knows it. Our legal system failed Jessica, her family and all of us who would like to
believe in justice. How can we any longer believe in the so-called justice system when children are not safe in their
own bedrooms when this derelict, perverted crack-head runs free. No. It seems that law-abiding citizens are the
prisoners today, while justice turns a blind eye and votes in favor of the criminal.
When is our so-called justice system going to act for the helpless, the hardworking, law-abiding citizen rather than
for the predators of this world?
I'm sure that soon there will be those in the press who will add greatly to the suffering of the Lunsford family by
