Shock and revulsion are the reactions to two reports on child abuse out today.
In one we are told children as young as 11 are being exploited through prostitution in the city.
In the other, the number of children in Newcastle at risk of abuse and neglect is revealed to be double the national
average.
The problems are there for all to see; the solutions are not so clear.
In the case of child prostitution in the city, agencies have identified 121 children as being at significant risk of being
dragged into this seedy underworld.
As a priority these vulnerable youngsters need to be protected.
The police have vowed to come down hard on anyone using child prostitutes but they should come down harder on
those who put these youngsters on to the streets. This vile trade must be smashed before it is allowed to get a grip in
the city.
But we, as a community, need to play a bigger role in beating the underlying causes of child prostitution.
A Barnardo's study revealed a strong link between abuse and neglect at home with child prostitution. They found
many children on the streets were abused and had run away from home or local authority care and into prostitution.
With Newcastle having the country's third highest proportion of youngsters on the child protection register it is easy
to see where the cycle of abuse begins.
Many vulnerable children are too frightened to come forward, which is why anyone who believes a child to be at
risk must report the matter to the authorities.
It is our responsibility as a caring community to protect the young and these vulnerable children need all the support
they can get.

Mumbai - It has been six months yet Maharashtra has not managed to find a public prosecutor to represent four
abused children in a fast-track court.
The alleged abusers are Duncan Grant (61) and Allan Waters (57), former British Royal Navy sailors, both of whom
worked at the Anchorage Shelter in Colaba.
