CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION OF THE RESEARCH 1.1 Brief background of the research The pioneer of logistics appeared in the United States of America in the earlier twentieth Century. And it is improved and perfected with the development of society and technology. There is more than one definition of logistics, but in general, the goal of logistics is meeting the requirements of customers; it is the art of managing the supply chain and science of managing and controlling the flow of goods, information and other resources between the point of origin and the point of consumption. The scope of logistics includes the integration of information, transportation, inventory, warehousing, material handling, and packaging (Wikipedia, viewed 2007). According to the different effects, logistics is classified into five varieties: Supply Chain Logistics, Business Logistics, Production logistics, Reclamation Logistics, and Castoff Logistics (Qin & Wang, 2001). In fact, logistics management is part of supply chain management and also the genesis of supply chain management. Supply chain management (SCM) is the activity of integrating the whole business, from procurement to production (processing), storage and sale for the products and services provided by a company (Takenaka, viewed 2007). It is the process of planning, implementing, and controlling the operations of the supply chain with the purpose to satisfy customer requirements as efficiently as possible. It spans all movement and storage of raw materials, work-in-process inventory, and finished goods from point-of-origin to point-of-consumption. (Wikipedia, viewed 2007). Generally speaking, supply chain management is concerned with management of the material flow, information flow, and fund flow (Luo, 2006). From this point, “its scope includes timing and quantity of material flow, logistics, improving efficiencies in problems with several decision makers, etc” (Sosic, 2002). Among the three flows, material flow is the focus and keystone of the research of supply chain management. “Material flow is a significant factor in the design of manufacturing systems. To design 1
