Frontiers of <strong>the</strong> Roman Empire – Ripa Pannonica in Hungary (RPH) Nomination statement<br />

Action – “To build on cultural diversity as strength of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Danube</strong> Region”<br />

In <strong>the</strong> interest of this<br />

– Protecting <strong>the</strong> <strong>Danube</strong> region’s cultural values: cooperation in <strong>the</strong> protection of values andheritage,<br />

joint scientific research, exchange of experiences, courses, conferences, events, traineeships; preservation<br />

of military memorial sites;<br />

– Increasing human contacts, promoting inter-cultural dialogue, inter-religious dialogues, language<br />

exchanges etc.<br />

– Establishing a network of ‘creative forces’ which includes actors in <strong>the</strong> artistic field. This network<br />

can build on <strong>the</strong> experience of <strong>the</strong> various festivals in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Danube</strong> Region;<br />

– Establishing a data-base ga<strong>the</strong>ring data on cultural assets and cultural activities.<br />

Project recommendation: The arrangement of tourist packages that extend from <strong>the</strong> Black Forest to <strong>the</strong><br />

Black Sea that are based upon a combination of bicycle-railway-boat routes.<br />

Action – “To improve planning and infrastructure for tourism”<br />

This should include accommodation and hospitality facilities, port tourism infrastructure, walkways and<br />

paths, infocentres, cycling routes and <strong>the</strong>ir networking in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Danube</strong> area including <strong>the</strong>ir linkage to <strong>the</strong><br />

network of routes along <strong>the</strong> rivers Sava and Drava. It should also emphasise protected areas and locations<br />

of natural and cultural heritage as well as <strong>the</strong>me parks, wine roads, view towers, grounds and equipment<br />

for sports and recreation.<br />

The <strong>Danube</strong> limes project can be found in <strong>the</strong> tourism subsection. (Action - “To promote cultural exchange<br />

and exchange in <strong>the</strong> arts”)<br />

e Network of <strong>Limes</strong> Parks<br />

The organization of <strong>the</strong> individual sites into a network is <strong>the</strong> basis for <strong>the</strong> cultural, tourism, educational<br />

and economic effectiveness of <strong>the</strong> RPH. The National Office of Cultural Heritage has prepared a selection<br />

of <strong>the</strong> RPH sites that can be developed into limes parks and linked to <strong>the</strong> European network of limes<br />

parks:<br />

• RPH 41. Aquincum fortress and canabae, Budapest 2 nd and 3 rd Districts – Óbuda: military<br />

amphi<strong>the</strong>ater: Excavated, conserved and exhibited. Planted with grass. Protected as an archaeological<br />

site. Located within <strong>the</strong> urban fabric. Access: good, by car or by public transport. May be visited at any<br />

time. – <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn and western gates of <strong>the</strong> legionary fortress and its baths: Partially excavated<br />

and conserved. Planted with grass. A copy of <strong>the</strong> capital of a Roman column found here has been<br />

erected. Protected as a historic property and as an archaeological site of national significance. Located<br />

in a public space within <strong>the</strong> urban fabric. Access: good – by automobile or by public transport. May be<br />

visited at any time. Bath Museum: Tue.-Sun 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and in winter depending on <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

• RPH 42. Aquincum municipium, Budapest 3 rd District: archaeological park and museum: Partially<br />

excavated and conserved. Gravel paths. Protected as an archaeological site. Access: good (Szentendre<br />

commuter rail, buses, automobile). Opportunities: exhibit, museum education programs, library, events,<br />

wedding pictures, café, store, publications, toilets. Open: April 15-30 and October 1-31 – archaeological<br />

site: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., exhibits: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., May 1-September 30 – archaeological site: 9 a.m. – 6<br />

p.m., exhibits 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.. Closed Mondays. November 1-April 15 exhibit: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.<br />
