At <strong>the</strong> event, an observer will see kids grouped toge<strong>the</strong>r by color – of <strong>the</strong>ir basketball shirts, not <strong>the</strong>ir sk<strong>in</strong> –enjoy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> camaraderie of teammates who, <strong>in</strong> most <strong>in</strong>stances, <strong>the</strong>y didn't know until <strong>the</strong>y put on <strong>the</strong>iruniforms. But what's equally impressive is <strong>the</strong> generations that have come toge<strong>the</strong>r to help <strong>the</strong> founders,Carey and Sherman, Advance Sportsmen of <strong>the</strong> Year <strong>in</strong> 2006, who have always had <strong>the</strong> support and use of<strong>the</strong> facilities at <strong>the</strong> Jewish Community Center (JCC), Sea View, <strong>the</strong> Catholic Youth Organization, PortRichmond, and West Brighton YMCA.People like Bert Lev<strong>in</strong>son, former Curtis baseball and basketball coach and Dreyfus Intermediate Schoolpr<strong>in</strong>cipal; Evan Pickman, <strong>the</strong> former College of Staten Island (<strong>CSI</strong>) basketball coach and physical educationdepartment head, and Tony Navar<strong>in</strong>o, whose retirement as Island CYO director hasn't kept him fromcont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g his commitment to <strong>the</strong> kids and <strong>the</strong> program.The list goes on.There is Wagner College women's basketball coach Gela Mikalauskas and her staff and players; TottenvilleHigh School football coach Jim Munson and former <strong>CSI</strong> basketball standout Gerard Nicholson.People like Pickman's wife, Miriam; Petrides athletic director Mike Duffy; Ingrid Ebanks, from <strong>the</strong> Beaconprogram at Dreyfus Intermediate School; Pete and CC Diamond and Steve Kessler; Chris Brennan, aMonsignor Farrell grad who works for <strong>the</strong> NBA; Lois Schwartz; and Mike Reape of <strong>the</strong> JCC.They have all been <strong>the</strong>re lend<strong>in</strong>g a hand from <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g, and will, more than likely, be <strong>the</strong>re aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>March.Onl<strong>in</strong>e registration is open. The games run from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. each day. Registration is free and teamassignments will be determ<strong>in</strong>ed at <strong>the</strong> evaluation sessions on March 13 from 9-11 a.m. at Petrides.Youngsters can expect to receive free team uniforms, as well as a host of o<strong>the</strong>r giveways and a full breakfastand lunch.
