Trend is slow to catch on here, but <strong>in</strong>terest grow<strong>in</strong>gPublished: Thursday, January 20, 2011, 10:06 AMBy Andrea BoyarskyNo longer simply framed as is for hang<strong>in</strong>g, photos today are available <strong>in</strong> different mediums — i.e., pr<strong>in</strong>ted onalum<strong>in</strong>um panels or canvas — and can be manipulated by computer programs like Photoshop to form animage that stands out and adds an appeal<strong>in</strong>g element to a room’s decor.George Roos, one of <strong>the</strong> founders of <strong>the</strong> Island-based Creative PhotographersGuild, said professional photos still can be a hard sell, but believes consumer<strong>in</strong>terest is grow<strong>in</strong>g.“The ma<strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong>g is to create an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g and beautiful image,” Roos said.“People buy someth<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y associate with.”The non-profit guild ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s a New Brighton gallery, where members’ worksare on display and may be purchased. Additionally, <strong>the</strong> Rosebank museumhosts photographic exhibits throughout <strong>the</strong> year and images often may be purchased from <strong>in</strong>dividualphotographers.“Whereas people used to see art [only] as oil pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> frames, that’s no longer <strong>the</strong> case,” said CarlRutberg, <strong>the</strong> museum’s executive director, <strong>in</strong>sist<strong>in</strong>g, “A photograph can have <strong>the</strong> same aes<strong>the</strong>tic value asany o<strong>the</strong>r art form.”Alice Austen House has been host to a mix of local and well-known photo artists, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Donald Weber,Tim He<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>gton, Jason Nocito and William Meyers.“Fire” is <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me of <strong>the</strong> museum’s current exhibit and features photos of fires <strong>in</strong> New York City around <strong>the</strong>Page 131 of 157
