PROSCIAARROCHARMy fight with juvenile diabetes (also known as Type-1 diabetes) began when I was at the tender age of 11years old. It was a difficult time in my life. I just transitioned to a new school as a sixth grade student andhad made new friends. My mother took my younger brother to the doctor and mentioned that I had a sorethroat. On a fluke, the doctor found that I was spilling sugar in my urine and I had juvenile diabetes.I will never forget sitting in my mother’s car while she went into the house to get my clothes because I wasbeing admitted into the hospital. My mind focused on one question: "Will I be able to live with or die fromthis disease I know nothing about?" What scared me more was the fear and pain displayed in mother’s voiceand face.My fear then changed to perseverance about three days into my seven-day hospital stay. Showing moreemotional strength than most adults, I sucked it up and said to myself this disease is not going to stop mefrom achieving my life goal of one day having a wife and kids.It has been a humbling experience with many ups and downs with this sometimes unpredictable disease. Ithas been my fighting spirit and ability to take charge (proactive nature) that has kept me in relatively goodhealth 22 years later.Two years ago, I made a decision that changed my life forever. For the first time in my life with diabetes, Iparticipated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) Walk for A Cure. It started with just mesigning up to walk and then before I knew it 20 close family members and friends joined me to raise over$900.Page 113 of 157
