Kean outscores College of Staten Island men, 95-85Published: Monday, January 17, 2011, 8:50 PMBy Jim WaggonerUNION, N.J. — The College of StatenIsland seemed <strong>in</strong>tent on pick<strong>in</strong>g up whereit left off <strong>in</strong> a historic victory over Baruch,but <strong>the</strong> Dolph<strong>in</strong>s fell short <strong>in</strong> a 95-85 nonconferenceloss to host Kean Mondayafternoon at Harwood Arena.Three days after post<strong>in</strong>g a thrill<strong>in</strong>g 109-107 triple-overtime triumph <strong>in</strong> Manhattan,<strong>the</strong> Dolph<strong>in</strong>s came out smok<strong>in</strong>g, shoot<strong>in</strong>g54.2 percent from <strong>the</strong> floor and nail<strong>in</strong>g 113-po<strong>in</strong>t baskets.It wasn’t enough to keep pace with <strong>the</strong>Cougars.Kean senior forward Jonathan Jonesscored a game-high 31 po<strong>in</strong>ts and grabbed10 rebounds to pace <strong>the</strong> Cougars, who are4-1 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Jersey Athletic Conferenceand 12-5 overall.Kean shot 56.1 percent from <strong>the</strong> floor andsank 24 of 27 free throws, rally<strong>in</strong>g from aStaten Island Advance file photo by HiltonFlores52-46 deficit wtith 16 m<strong>in</strong>utes rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<strong>CSI</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t guard Thomas Tibbs tallied 27 po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> Monday afternoon's <strong>CSI</strong> trailed by a dozen, 35-23, with five95-85 basketball loss at Kean.m<strong>in</strong>utes left <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half and receivedano<strong>the</strong>r monster game from po<strong>in</strong>t guardThomas Tibbs, who tallied 27 po<strong>in</strong>ts despite play<strong>in</strong>g with a pa<strong>in</strong>ful gro<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury.Tibbs had 19 po<strong>in</strong>ts by halftime, hitt<strong>in</strong>g 4-of-6 3-po<strong>in</strong>t shots.Page 66 of 157
It was Tibbs’ buzzer-beater from <strong>the</strong> right w<strong>in</strong>g that had powered <strong>CSI</strong> to its w<strong>in</strong> over Baruch. He had 31po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> that CUNY Conference game.Kean rega<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> lead for good at 71-70 with 6:41 rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on a Jones layup. The hosts pulled away <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al few m<strong>in</strong>utes.Junior forward Jordan Young scored 20 po<strong>in</strong>ts for <strong>the</strong> Dolph<strong>in</strong>s and sits at 999 for his career. Young also hadfive rebounds and six assists before foul<strong>in</strong>g out.Dale Taranto had ano<strong>the</strong>r solid l<strong>in</strong>e — 12 po<strong>in</strong>ts, five rebounds, five assists and two steals — and BloochyMagliore added 11 po<strong>in</strong>ts.But <strong>the</strong> Dolph<strong>in</strong>s struggled try<strong>in</strong>g to keep up with <strong>the</strong> 6-foot-5, 220-pound Jones <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t, where <strong>the</strong>Cougars enjoyed a 42-28 scor<strong>in</strong>g edge. Kean also had a 28-13 bench advantage and led 12-4 <strong>in</strong> secondchancepo<strong>in</strong>ts.<strong>CSI</strong> dropped to 10-4 for <strong>the</strong> season while hav<strong>in</strong>g a four-game w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g streak halted and takes a 5-0 CUNYrecord to City College Wednesday night.NOTES: The buzz over <strong>CSI</strong>’s 109-107 w<strong>in</strong> at Baruch required a look at <strong>the</strong> record books. The Dolph<strong>in</strong>sscored a 127-92 w<strong>in</strong> over aga<strong>in</strong>st City College on Jan. 14, 1989, <strong>the</strong> highest po<strong>in</strong>t total.
