CUNYAC / HSS SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE MONTHVladislav Romanov • College of Staten Island • Men's Swimm<strong>in</strong>g & Div<strong>in</strong>gCUNYAC/HSS Scholar-Athlete of <strong>the</strong> Month, December 2010A junior All-American swimmer at <strong>the</strong> College of Staten Island, Vladislav Romanov has been named<strong>the</strong> CUNY Athletic Conference / Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of <strong>the</strong> Month for <strong>the</strong>f<strong>in</strong>al month of 2010.“I always thought I could use my bra<strong>in</strong> to get what I want,” says <strong>the</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>ed Bus<strong>in</strong>ess F<strong>in</strong>ance major,“So I take my dreams and set goals and I do what I have to do to achieve <strong>the</strong>m.”Romanov holds a grade po<strong>in</strong>t average of 3.617. With a highly driven attitude, he wants to become anentrepreneur where he will create and run his own bus<strong>in</strong>ess.His strong-m<strong>in</strong>ded approach extends from <strong>the</strong> classroom <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> swimm<strong>in</strong>g pool. Though <strong>the</strong> month ofDecember saw just two events it was <strong>the</strong> quality he made of <strong>the</strong>m that sh<strong>in</strong>ed. On December 5, hetraveled to <strong>the</strong> ECAC Championship where he f<strong>in</strong>ished first <strong>in</strong> both <strong>the</strong> 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of1:50.09 and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 51.26. The versatile swimmer f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>the</strong> 200Yard IM <strong>in</strong> 6th place out of 60 participants. Alongside teammates Nikolay Shevchenko, Danila Novikovand Joe Lee, Romanov f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>the</strong> 200 Yard Medley Relay <strong>in</strong> third place with a time of 1:35.33.Just a few days later on December 8, <strong>the</strong> Dolph<strong>in</strong>s defeated Brooklyn College where Romanov f<strong>in</strong>ishedwith three golden w<strong>in</strong>s that <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>the</strong> 200 Yard Medley Relay, 1000 Yard Freestyle and 100 YardBackstroke.“I am motivated by competition,” said Romanov, “When we go to <strong>the</strong> Nationals or <strong>the</strong> ECACchampionships, people <strong>the</strong>re know what k<strong>in</strong>d of swimmer I am, and that is a great feel<strong>in</strong>g. Them see<strong>in</strong>gme as competition is compet<strong>in</strong>g to me.”Page 46 of 157
