St.Mary’s teens have photographed a myriad of events, rang<strong>in</strong>g from coverage of Tribeca Film Fellowsscreen<strong>in</strong>gs to Parks & Recreation festivals such as W<strong>in</strong>terJam, Street Games, and Drums Along <strong>the</strong> Hudson.The Daffodil Project is an annual volunteer beautification effort that began between New Yorkers for Parksand Parks & Recreation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> days after 9/11 when Dutch bulb supplier Hans Van Waardenburg of B&KFlowerbulbs donated a half a million daffodils to <strong>the</strong> City of New York <strong>in</strong> a gesture of support. This past fall,<strong>the</strong> four millionth bulb was planted and <strong>the</strong> Project has grown to <strong>in</strong>clude a year-round roster of activities,<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> annual photography contest, <strong>in</strong> all five boroughs. As <strong>the</strong> photographic selections <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> exhibition demonstrate, <strong>the</strong> reemergence each year of <strong>the</strong> flowers across <strong>the</strong> city provides a collectiveemotional renewal.The Parks Inspection Program’s tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>spectors conduct 5,000 <strong>in</strong>spections per year, report<strong>in</strong>g on parkelements such as flags, sidewalks, and signs, determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g whe<strong>the</strong>r any are miss<strong>in</strong>g, damaged, faded, orworn. While on <strong>in</strong>spection patrol <strong>the</strong>y have an opportunity to witness and record <strong>the</strong> best aspects of ourparks. Divert<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir cameras from <strong>the</strong>ir appo<strong>in</strong>ted task, <strong>the</strong>y have captured glimpses of natural beauty aswell as candid activities.The Arsenal Gallery is dedicated to exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mes of nature, urban space, wildlife, New York City parksand park history.
