Petosa, <strong>the</strong> Advance’s Sportsman of <strong>the</strong> Year, followed Island coach<strong>in</strong>g icons Evan Pickman and HowieRuppert at <strong>CSI</strong>, and had ano<strong>the</strong>r by his side <strong>in</strong> Matty White while he ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed improbable success with <strong>the</strong>busiest side job <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country.Ambros<strong>in</strong>o received <strong>the</strong> Service Award for what is approach<strong>in</strong>g 40 years of susta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Laurie’s legacy with abasketball game that turned <strong>in</strong>to an annual scholarship and an Intermediate School that bears Laurie’sname.“I never did it expect<strong>in</strong>g anyth<strong>in</strong>g likethat,” said Ambros<strong>in</strong>o as he accepted <strong>the</strong>award. “I did it because Rocco was myfriend.”So Ambros<strong>in</strong>o started with a basketballgame, cops from <strong>the</strong> 9th Prec<strong>in</strong>ct aga<strong>in</strong>stteachers from Markham IntermediateSchool, where he and Laurie wereclassmates. They sold 714 tickets for adollar each and put <strong>the</strong> money <strong>in</strong> a freezerAdvance Service Award recipient Larry Ambros<strong>in</strong>o makes a po<strong>in</strong>t.for safe-keep<strong>in</strong>g.A few years later, <strong>in</strong> 1975, <strong>the</strong>y named <strong>the</strong>new Intermediate School go<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>in</strong> New Spr<strong>in</strong>gville, I.S. 72, <strong>the</strong> Rocco Laurie School. Thirty years later,Ambros<strong>in</strong>o pushed for a change, to call it <strong>the</strong> Police Officer Rocco Laurie School.And each year he goes back to talk to a new group of <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g sixth graders to tell <strong>the</strong>m about his friend,<strong>the</strong> champion shot putter and decorated United States Mar<strong>in</strong>e.“I want to make sure <strong>the</strong>y know who he is,” said Ambros<strong>in</strong>o.They all do, because of Ambros<strong>in</strong>o.You could see <strong>the</strong> same drive <strong>in</strong> Petosa, who’s <strong>in</strong>to his third decade treat<strong>in</strong>g his second job — by day he’sbeen teach<strong>in</strong>g high school for <strong>the</strong> past 25 years — like his top priority.After coach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> practices and <strong>the</strong>games, you can catch Petosa at one Islandhigh school game after ano<strong>the</strong>r, check<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> with coaches and players, most of whomPage 30 of 157
