Creation of other international centers 165not only advised CGIAR on research priorities but conducted feasibilitystudies and periodically analyzed the effectiveness of existing internationalagricultural research programs.The achievements of CGIAR are well known and need not be repeated here.The diameter of its umbrella has ever widened. In 1972, the first year offunding, the Group supported five international research centers. By 1976, thenetwork of centers and programs financed through the CGIAR system numbered11 and financial support had increased fourfold, to $64 million. By 1981,13 institutes or programs were receiving support from the Group, with acombined budget of about $145 million. 2 Surely not even the most optimisticmembers of the Group in 1971 envisioned a program of such magnitude andsuccess.2The CGIAR publishes information on details of programs of the 13 agricultural research centers.The booklet, titled Consultative Group on lnternational Agricultural Research, is available from theCGIAR Secretariat, 1818 H Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20433.
