Creation of other <strong>in</strong>ternational centers 165not only advised CGIAR on research priorities but conducted feasibilitystudies and periodically analyzed the effectiveness of exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternationalagricultural research programs.The achievements of CGIAR are well known and need not be repeated here.The diameter of its umbrella has ever widened. In 1972, the first year offund<strong>in</strong>g, the Group supported five <strong>in</strong>ternational research centers. By 1976, thenetwork of centers and programs f<strong>in</strong>anced through the CGIAR system numbered11 and f<strong>in</strong>ancial support had <strong>in</strong>creased fourfold, to $64 million. By 1981,13 <strong>in</strong>stitutes or programs were receiv<strong>in</strong>g support from the Group, with acomb<strong>in</strong>ed budget of about $145 million. 2 Surely not even the most optimisticmembers of the Group <strong>in</strong> 1971 envisioned a program of such magnitude andsuccess.2The CGIAR publishes <strong>in</strong>formation on details of programs of the 13 agricultural research centers.The booklet, titled Consultative Group on lnternational Agricultural Research, is available from theCGIAR Secretariat, 1818 H Street, N.W., Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C. 20433.
