58 History of the <strong>International</strong> <strong>Rice</strong> Research InstituteBradfield retired from<strong>IRRI</strong> at age 75. He andMrs. Bradfield rodefrom their house to theresearch center <strong>in</strong> acalesa to attend thedespedida that <strong>IRRI</strong>gave them.methods of tissue analysis for detect<strong>in</strong>g the nutritional status of rice. The othervisit<strong>in</strong>g scientist was Edward H. Tyner, on sabbatical leave from the Universityof Ill<strong>in</strong>ois. He arrived <strong>in</strong> September 1962 and spent a year study<strong>in</strong>g theforms and availability of phosphorus <strong>in</strong> flooded rice soils.<strong>An</strong>other activity <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the Department of Agronomy and Soils <strong>in</strong><strong>IRRI</strong>’s early years was multiple cropp<strong>in</strong>g. Richard Bradfield, who had traveledextensively <strong>in</strong> Asia <strong>in</strong> the mid-l950s, became <strong>in</strong>tensely <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>gcropp<strong>in</strong>g systems associated with rice. When he retired from CornellUniversity, the Rockefeller Foundation hired him as a special consultant andassigned him to <strong>IRRI</strong> <strong>in</strong> late 1964 to work on multiple cropp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> tropical ricegrow<strong>in</strong>gcountries. Although then 68 years old, Bradfield had unusual energyand was deeply absorbed <strong>in</strong> his work. He laid a good foundation for cropp<strong>in</strong>gsystems associated with rice, prepar<strong>in</strong>g the way for more extensive work to beundertaken by <strong>IRRI</strong> later. Bradfield’s work is not <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> <strong>IRRI</strong>’s annualreports, but he published a number of articles <strong>in</strong> scientific journals. A goodsummary of his f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs can be found <strong>in</strong> <strong>Rice</strong>, Science and Man, the publicationthat stemmed from <strong>IRRI</strong>’s tenth anniversary celebration <strong>in</strong> 1972. Bradfieldcont<strong>in</strong>ued at <strong>IRRI</strong> until 1 July 1971, when he retired for the second time. His
