In 1981, the phytotron building was enlarged to provide space for aRice Tissue Culture Laboratory.During the early ,days of the CGIAR (1973-1976), IRRI, along with otherinternational agricultural research centers, fared remarkably well. Many of thegrants it received were unrestricted and applicable to both core budget andcapital costs — a favorable circumstance that made possible the improvementof the physical plant during that period.
