48 History of the International Rice Research InstituteThe assemblage then moved to the auditorium for the invocation, the variousspeeches of greeting, musical selections by the University of the PhilippinesConservatory Trio, and climaxing the program, the address of PresidentMacapagal.Luncheon, a dignified affair, mainly with arranged seating at individuallyserved tables, was attended by some 250 people, including (besides the manyvisitors) IRRI professional staff and, of course, representatives of the neighboringCollege of Agriculture. It took place in the dining rooms and lounge of thecafeteria-dormitory building and gave many of the guests an opportunity fora leisurely view of the two murals commissioned for the Institute from thewell-known Philippine artist, Vicente Manansala.In the afternoon, a program of dances, arranged especially for the occasionof IRRI’s dedication, was presented in the auditorium by the world-renowneddance troupe of the Bayanihan Folk Arts Center in Manila.There followed the second of two guided tours (the first having taken placejust before lunch) of the Institute buildings, the residential area, and theexperimental fields.With the dedication over, 11 of the scientific staff already in residence, and3 more appointments approved for the near future, IRRI was ready for its greatadventure in applied science.
