<strong>IRRI</strong> today 183In spite of this highly efficient operation <strong>in</strong> 1972 (and the output per personcould scarcely be exceeded), the volume of publications emanat<strong>in</strong>g from theOIS today dwarfs <strong>IRRI</strong>’s earlier production.In addition to cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g The <strong>IRRI</strong> Reporter, the Institute now puts out abimonthly journal, <strong>International</strong> <strong>Rice</strong> Research Newsletter (first issued <strong>in</strong> 1976),which conta<strong>in</strong>s short articles by rice scientists throughout the world andconstitutes the most up-to-date account of current research on rice.In 1976, <strong>IRRI</strong> began issu<strong>in</strong>g a new set of publications called the <strong>IRRI</strong> ResearchPaper Series, which serves as a vehicle for the timely announcement of researchf<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs of the Institute’s senior scientists and their associated junior staff. Theseries has proved to be a popular publish<strong>in</strong>g medium for the <strong>IRRI</strong> staff andabout 10 papers are issued each year. (A complete list of the series from itsbeg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g appears <strong>in</strong> Appendix 12.)Besides the three cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g publications just mentioned, the OIS preparesa lengthy (more than 500-page) <strong>An</strong>nual Report from the materials sent <strong>in</strong> by thescientific staff. Each annual report is preceded by a shorter booklet calledResearch Highlights, which is pr<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> time to be distributed to the pr<strong>in</strong>cipaldonors before the annual centers week sponsored by the CGIAR.A major responsibility of the OIS is to edit and publish the proceed<strong>in</strong>gs ofall conferences, workshops, and symposia held by <strong>IRRI</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g the year. As anexample of the workload, <strong>in</strong> 1979 alone the follow<strong>in</strong>g publications of this typewere issued:• Report of a <strong>Rice</strong> Cold Tolerance Workshop• Proceed<strong>in</strong>gs of the 1978 <strong>International</strong> Deepwater <strong>Rice</strong> Workshop• Proceed<strong>in</strong>gs of the <strong>Rice</strong> Blast Workshop• Interfaces between Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Science• Proceed<strong>in</strong>gs of the Workshop on Chemical Aspects of Gra<strong>in</strong> Quality• Nitrogen and <strong>Rice</strong>• Brown Planthopper: Threat to <strong>Rice</strong> Production <strong>in</strong> Asia• Ra<strong>in</strong>fed Lowland <strong>Rice</strong>• Farm-level Constra<strong>in</strong>ts to High <strong>Rice</strong> Yields <strong>in</strong> Asia: 1974-77Furthermore, <strong>IRRI</strong> makes a significant contribution to the rice literature bypublish<strong>in</strong>g bullet<strong>in</strong>s and <strong>books</strong> written by its senior staff.
