Staff members and their wives who had already arrived <strong>in</strong> thePhilipp<strong>in</strong>es naturally had a voice <strong>in</strong> the selection of such items for theirprospective houses. All furniture was made <strong>in</strong> the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es accord<strong>in</strong>g to<strong>IRRI</strong> approved style and specifications.There have been no significant changes <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terior plan of the orig<strong>in</strong>alstaff houses, each hav<strong>in</strong>g three bedrooms, two and a half baths, a liv<strong>in</strong>g-d<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>garea, a study, a kitchen and utility area, maids’ quarters, screened porch, andcarport. The total floor space <strong>in</strong> all houses was the same, and the lot sizes werealmost identical throughout. There were three different floor plans for themore numerous one-story houses, to give needed variation <strong>in</strong> layout and toensure that no matter on which side of the road a house was located, its porchwould be on the downhill side (this detail be<strong>in</strong>g no problem <strong>in</strong> the split-levelhouses, which were all on one side of the road).The 8 units (later enlarged to 10 units) of apartments conta<strong>in</strong>ed one- andtwo-bedroom duplexes for unmarried staff, for a few younger scientists at theassociate level, and for visit<strong>in</strong>g scientists.The Avecilla Build<strong>in</strong>g Corporation started construct<strong>in</strong>g the houses on 10January 1961. Except for mov<strong>in</strong>g the position of the director’s house up the hillabout 18 m to <strong>in</strong>crease its distance from the swimm<strong>in</strong>g pool area, no significantchanges were made <strong>in</strong> the plan that Architect Arguelles had submitted on 30May 1960. The estimated cost of the entire project was $1,209,334, the f<strong>in</strong>alfigure be<strong>in</strong>g somewhat, though not appreciably, higher.The contract with Avecilla called for the completion by 1 July 1961 of eighthous<strong>in</strong>g units (director’s house, guesthouse, and six staff houses), the swim-
