I realise that, “Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything, in the One who makes me who I am” (Philippians 4:12-‐13, The Message). This is my encouragement, my security and my hope, whether I am in crisis or not. This is ‘home’ – where my heart is. And who knows, I may continue as a veteran for a while longer! 114

Introduction Risk, danger and suffering are increasingly prevalent in many cross-‐cultural fields. In the Arab world, with regime change and the “Arab spring,” many cross-‐cultural workers have been confronted with decisions to evacuate or remain in their field of service. Books and studies in the past have looked at worker retention, predominantly through the lens of organizational factors, including the ReMAP study, Too Valuable to Lose, and Worth Keeping (Taylor et al). Recently, the Fruitful Practice research has identified key themes for successful indigenous church development in the Muslim world. Such studies provide good benchmarks and a framework in order to understand the key issues in worker retention, as well as individual and team effectiveness. In this paper, we want to describe from a field leader perspective some traits that we believe contribute to resilient workers -‐ those who stay in spite of difficult circumstances. We have tried to avoid reiteration of themes already elucidated in other studies, and what is articulated is based primarily on personal observation and thus may be considered anecdotal. The characteristics proffered could be examined in future research efforts on the subject of cross-‐cultural worker retention and resiliency. 2.
