St Francis Magazine Vol 8, No 2 | April 2012 understand the fundamental principles that shape the work and ministry of the mission agency. Because of the context of mission and the church today is increasingly one of risk, the selection and recruitment process of a mission agency must explore a candidate’s theology of risk and suffering. It may be that in the statement of faith that many organisations ask from a candidate, articulating their theology of risk and suffering also be required. Establishing this basic understanding will allow the mission agency to work with the candidate and their home church so as to find common ground for partnership in ministry. 6.2 Developing policies and best practice guidelines Mission agencies must establish written policies that reflect the theology underpinning their work and ministry. These policies should be the framework for operations that is agreed through consultation within the partnerships of ministry. They need to provide clarity to processes, give clear direction for decision-making in a crisis, be accessible for all members of the agency, while being flexible when actioned in changing situations. Policies must provide the structure or framework within which understandable decisions can be made in crisis situations. Policy and best practice guideline areas could include: i. selection and recruitment ii. risk analysis and assessment procedures iii. risk and security codification iv. kidnapping and hostages v. other specific crisis situations vi. evacuation guidelines/exit strategies vii. crisis management team/administrative strategies viii. financial matters ix. membercare in crisis x. follow-‐up 172
