(Deut 4.20) In his study on liminality, Turner starts with the first step of separation and then the “betwixt and between” state of being neither here nor there. He sees this as a prime opportunity for growth as a group. YHWH called the Hebrews a people for Himself (Ex 6:7), liberated them as a group that is sometimes described in military overtones like an army (Ex 6:26, 12:51 ff), cared for them with the collective provisions of manna, water, light and cloud, and then called them together at Sinai for a solemn assembly to pronounce the terms of their covenant relationship. At Sinai one might say He gave the house-‐rules for the marriage relationship between Him and His bride. He pronounced that He would be faithful and keep “his covenant of love to a thousand generations” (Deut 7:9) and asked her to respond in kind. Yet, the words of YHWH to this community are chilling “...to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me” (Num 14:35). Yet YHWH shows grace to these mutineers whom he had miraculously led through the Red Sea, and eventually opens the Jordan River to lead them into the Promised Land. 4.7 Lessons from the wilderness 246
St Francis Magazine Vol 8, No 2 | April 2012 Just how many lessons the children of Israel learned in their desert sojourn is a subject of debate. We have observed that from the Divine perspective, they received rather low grades. Oropeza suggests that they learned “behavioural lessons” about “patience, faith and humility. 111 ” As we examine the viewpoints of Paul in I Cor 10, and the writer to the Hebrews, however, one wonders if it would be better to say that by way of negative example these two writers kindly exhort their readers to learn patience, faith and humility. Paul writing to the Corinthians about the historical example of the people of the old covenant writes: For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert… (I Cor. 10:1-‐5). ….therefore…….. (I Cor. 10:6-‐13) Similarly the writer to the Hebrews said that the Hebrews of the wilderness generation possessed ‘hardened hearts’ (3:8, 15), ‘hearts that go astray’ (3:10), ‘evil, unbelieving, hearts’ (3:12), and they are disbelieving (3:19), and faithless (4:2). Their wills were ‘rebellious’ (3:16) and ‘disobedient’ (3:18; 4:6, 11). These inner attitudes came out in their actions 111 Oropeza, p. 75. Cohn (p.15) seemingly closer to the Biblical texts, however, suggests that they learned that competiveness with respect to gathering manna was useless, that jealous ambition in the case of Miriam and Aaron as well as the sons of Korah was rewarded more with punishment than approval and that humility and meekness as seen in Moses were traits that were rewarded. 247
