Operation PSA: The Action Learning of Curiosity and CreativityAPPENDIX CTranscript of the Undergraduate PSA Presented at the Teaching PublicAdministration Conference, May 31-June 8, 2008How did you learn about public administration?Respondent #1: I learned about it from the former mayor of Grand Rapidswho had made the comment that people weren’t learning civics anymore, so, Igot interested.Respondent #2: I learned about it from one of my advisors who suggested itsince I wanted to work with nonprofits. My actual major is public relations, buthe suggested public and nonprofit administration for my minor.Respondent #3: I learned about it at my community college, MuskegonCommunity College, when I went and talked to my advisor and she suggestedpublic administration would be needing a lot of solid educated individuals to fillthe careers in upcoming years.What does public administration mean to you?Respondent #1: It means making a difference in the lives of people around youand in your community.Respondent #2: For me it means having the knowledge to know how I can besteffect the change when I start working with a nonprofit.Respondent #3: Public administration to me is everything in society…everything in society that sometimes gets overlooked if people don’t understandsomething and to do the research into it, it’s basically everything and howeverything runs.Do you think you’re in the right field and why?Respondent #1: Absolutely, without a doubt. There is no other field that I canfind that offers such a way to have a hands-on impact on everybody’s daily life.Respondent #2: I would say I’m definitely in the right field now.Respondent #3: Definitely, public administration is for me. I think GrandValley has a really, really good curriculum and I know that I would like to bringmy experience, my education, and my research into the field and give a veryinteresting approach to the ethics and everything that needs to be installed inpublic administration.How important is public administration and do we really need this field?Respondent #1: Public administration is critical to our lives, as I hadmentioned. We really do need this field and particularly at the undergraduatelevel like we are. It is one thing to talk about it as an academic and it’s anotherthing to actually go out there and impact the lives of people.Respondent #2: I think public administration is really important and, after380 Journal of Public Affairs Education
Operation PSA: The Action Learning of Curiosity and Creativitytaking this class, I can’t imagine if our cities and our government were run bypeople who didn’t know, at least, the basics and hopefully more then the basics,which is what we are learning.Respondent #3: I think public administration is really important. My master’sdegree that I’m going to get from Michigan State is in health careadministration and I think that it’s an upcoming career that many people needto be educated in to make, formulate, decisions — educated decisions.What was your most memorable public administration class and why?Respondent #1: I’ll say both of the public administration classes I am takingright now. I’m taking PA 270 and PA 307, which is local politics. This class isfascinating because we get to really apply what we’re learning to our ownsituations rather then just textbook knowledge. Local politics is fascinating tome because I’ve never had a course that has gone quite so focused on somethingso personal.Respondent #2: This is the only one I’ve taken it, but it’s been reallymemorable, because, in addition to learning the theories, I know how to applythem now. I think that’s really important.Respondent #3: I would have to say this one. This is my second one I’vetaken. I took PA 360, which is the nonprofit, um, public administrationapproach, organizational approach, and this one. I mean, to learn everythingin a fun manner and to be able to put all of the seriousness that needs to gointo the field and to watch Happy Feet and relate that to public administrationwas really, really, really cool.
