Enhancing Professional Socialization Through the Metaphor of Traditionchallenge in a context where the principles of democracy are increasinglyexpected to prevail. Therefore, traditions designed to attend to the issue oflegitimacy likely will be the most successful ones for calming public criticisms.While I have offered one possible interpretation of the varying traditions ofpublic administration, for purposes of designing a curriculum, the use of themetaphor itself is the most important and compelling thing for pedagogy.Organizing the field’s concepts according to tradition helps students of publicadministration anchor their professional identities and enhance understandingof their own philosophical commitments and shared theoretical lineage.
