How Do We Know What They Know?Evaluating Student-Learning Outcomes in an MPA ProgramAPPENDIX B.EXAMPLE OF FINAL SKILLS SELF-ASSESSMENTGRADUATE CENTER FOR PUBLIC POLICY AND ADMINISTRATIONFINAL SKILLS SELF-ASSESSMENTInstructions: Effective as <strong>of</strong> the 2007 fall semester, all PPA 697 students arerequired to complete the Final Skills Self-Assessment, as the final requirement <strong>of</strong>PPA 697. The purpose <strong>of</strong> this self-assessment is to allow students and faculty toassess student skills in each core content area at the conclusion <strong>of</strong> studies in theCalifornia State University, Long Beach MPA Program. It is vital that studentsprovide honest and accurate information in this final assessment. The purpose<strong>of</strong> this requirement is to provide an empirical basis for assessing student skilldevelopmentas a result <strong>of</strong> instruction received in the MPA Program. This FinalSkills Self-Assessment should be submitted to your PPA 697 advisor, along withthe Initial Skills Self-Assessment that you completed in PPA 500. The PPA 697advisor will compare the Initial and Final Skills Self-Assessments to analyze yourgrowth and development in the field <strong>of</strong> <strong>public</strong> administration and policy. If youdid not complete an Initial Skills Self-Assessment in PPA 500, the Final SkillsSelf-Assessment will be submitted in Part IV (if a case study approach was usedin PPA 697), or Part I (if a traditional research project was completed).Please begin by responding to the questions on the following page. Indicate yourknowledge in each <strong>of</strong> these areas by circling the most appropriate number (1 =no knowledge, 5 = a great deal <strong>of</strong> knowledge). In Part II, please provide a writtendiscussion <strong>of</strong> any skills and/or experience that you have in the core content areas.Your discussion should include an honest assessment <strong>of</strong> your strengths andweaknesses in each content area. For more information on each topic, see the list<strong>of</strong> core concepts for each <strong>of</strong> these core content areas on the PPA department Webpage at http://www.csulb.edu/colleges/chhs/departments/ppa/coreconcepts/. Theanswers provided in Part II <strong>of</strong> this Final Skills Self-Assessment should besubstantially different than those provided on the Initial Skills Self-Assessment,and should demonstrate concrete examples <strong>of</strong> skill acquisition in each <strong>of</strong> the corecontent areas. Use specific examples to illustrate the skills that you have acquiredin each core area. Finally, in Part III, please reflect on the skills that you acquiredin the program and how well the program met your expectations.Format: There is no mandated length for this assignment. However, it is usefulto organize your discussion by core content area. Upon completion, pleasesubmit this assignment to your PPA 697 instructor, along with the Initial SkillsSelf-Assessment that was completed in PPA 500, and the skills-assessmentapproval form.
