HARMONY EDITINGChapter OverviewPresets are configured as Harmony or Modeling. Thefollowing pages detail only the editing interface forpresets configured to produce harmony. The editinterface for modeling presets is discussed in thechapter entitled Lead Voice Modeling Editing.Preset Type - menu PCThis configures the current preset’s edit menus foreither Harmony/Doubling processing or LeadModeling processing.Harmony Control - menu HCThe parameters in this screen determine the type ofharmony processing for the current preset and it’sassociated musical requirements.Mode allows you to choose between the multivoiceshift modes. The menu interface will change adding orremoving additional parameters depending on themode chosen.o Shift - no additional parameters in this screeno Scale - Key and Scaleo Chord - Chord Root and Typeo Notes - no additional parameterso Combi - Key and ScaleWhen the current value is Scale or Combi, this screenis where you set Key and Scale your song.If the current value configures the preset for Chordmode, you can store the preset with default values forthe Root and Chord Type.Voicing Screens - menus V0 to V6These edit screens apply to the pitch shifting aspects ofyour four harmony voices.V0:Voice LevelThe four EDIT knobs control the volumes of each ofthe voices. Note that the range of values goes from Offto +6 dB. Typically, you would avoid the 0dB to +6dBvalues unless only a single voice is active and you needextra level for it. The presets were created at thefactory at optimum levels designed to minimize outputdistortion that may arise when adding the levels of thevoices together at high levels.V1:Voice PansEach voice may have a unique pan position. There are100 possible steps in each of the left and right panpositions.V2:Voicing: Harmony IntervalsHere you set the pitch shifting intervals depending onthe harmony mode chosen in the Harmony Controlmenu. The representations of the pitch shifts also varyaccording the current harmony mode.In Shift mode, you may pitch shift the voice inchromatic (fixed), one semitone intervals up to twooctaves in either direction. In Scale mode, the pitch shift follows diatonic (movingthird) rules. The choices are musically useful and coverthe +/- two octave range. In Chord mode, the interval range covers the range ofharmony motion defined by Chord mode.In Notes mode voicing is determined by the notes youhold down on your MIDI keyboard and so adjustmentis not applicable in this screen. In Combi mode the intervals are the same as for Scalemode because these two modes are similar.V3:Voicing GenderEach voice has its own timbre adjustment in the formof Gender control. Values below 0 lend each voice amore masculine and deeper effect and values above 0lend a more feminine or thinner effect.V4: Portamento TimesEach voice has its own Portamento time. Portamentois a delayed response to the pitch movement of yoursinging voice. It is also referred to as “Glide” insynthesizers. The range of values equals approximatelyhow long the upwards or downwards slide will take toreach each new note. Setting each voice to differentvalues greatly assists the illusion of other singerssinging with you.V5: Smoothing AmountLike Portamento, setting each voice with a unique value ofthe Smoothing parameter helps the harmonies soundmore natural. At low values, Smoothing acts like pitchcorrection of the harmony voices according to the shiftingrules applied by the current harmony mode. With thevoices corrected like this, some Portamento is usuallyrequired to help soften note to note transitions. Highervalues offer progressively less correction.17
