A chance SAIS reunion
took place in St. Petersburg,
Russia, in June where five
alumni just happened to be on
business. The gathering included
Phillip Cornell B’05,
’06, Jonathan Dunn B’05, ’06,
Miriam Elder B’05, ’06, Alice
Faibishenko B’05, ’06 and
Arminé Guledjian B’05, ’06.
Payton Deeks ’06 recently
caught up with fellow Southeast
Asia Studies graduates Vi
Than ’05 and Adam Welsh
’06 in Canberra, Australia.
Than and her family will
soon be relocating to Thailand
while Welsh is headed
to Mongolia for a short-term
assignment.
James Gibney ’06, his
wife, Anne, and their son live
in Reston, Va. Since February
2009, Gibney has been a
manager with Capgemini in
Washington, D.C., a global
company that specializes in
consulting, technology and
outsourcing.
Diana G. Iskelov JHU
’05, ’06 graduated from the
University of Pennsylvania’s
Law School in June 2009. She
now lives in New York City,
where she has worked as a
litigation associate at
Sullivan & Cromwell LLP
since November 2009.
Adam Mendelson ’06
recently moved from San
Francisco to New York and
is the director of development
at CleanPath Ventures,
a San Francisco-based solar
investment fund. Mendelson
left the SunPower Corporation
in May where he held
various positions related to
project finance and largescale
solar development. He
continues to spend time with
SAIS friends and colleagues
in New York and attended the
SAIS Energy Alumni happy
hour in April.
Since March 2010, Yugo
Nakamura ’06 has headed
Bloomberg’s Tokyo New
Energy Finance office, which
he personally set up upon
arriving at the job. He covers
energy and climate change
policy in Japan.
Eduard Pesendorfer
B’05, ’06 has been working
as chief of the Legislative
Review Section of the Organization
for Security and Cooperation
in Europe mission
in Kosovo since 2007. He
reports that fellow alumni in
Pristina helped to organize a
trip for SAIS Conflict Management
students to visit
Kosovo in 2010.

Nurul Izzah Anwar ’07 is
a rising star in Malaysian
politics. Though she does
come from a distinguished
political family (her mother
is president of the People’s
Justice Party, PKR, and her
father was a former deputy
prime minister of Malaysia),
Anwar is blazing her own
trail within the party and
gaining recognition throughout
Asia. Since 2008, she has
served as the member of parliament
for Lembah Pantai.
In August 2010, Henry
Baker JHU’98, B’06, ’07
moved to Milan, his wife’s
home country, from Washington,
D.C. There, he works
as staff writer and managing
editor at TopLegal International,
a pan-European law
publication.
Since November 2010,
Kate Bateman ’07 had been
working at the U.S. Embassy
in Kabul on donor coordination
and international partnerships.
She has connected

WHAT WE’VE HeARD
In January 2012, Bateman
and her husband moved to
southwest England for his
assignment with NATO.
Sarina Beges ’07 left the
Synergos Institute in New
York in October 2010, where
she was managing a program
supporting social entrepreneurs
in the Arab world,
to move with her husband
to the San Francisco Bay
Area. She became program
manager at Stanford University’s
Center on Democracy,
Development and Rule of
Law.
Ilya Bourtman JHU’06,
’07 was appointed as BP
Russia’s head of external
affairs in August 2010, based
in Moscow. As a side project,
he is working on developing
a social networking application
targeting people in the
former Soviet Union.
Matthew Cummins
B’05, ’07 assumed the post
of social policy specialist at
UNICEF in New York City
in July.
John Robert Force ’07
joined USAID-Serbia in
July as a senior rule of law
adviser in Belgrade. He was
previously with USAID-
Cambodia working on
democracy and governance
programs.
Eric Jaffe ’07 is living in
London and has been working
as a research manager in
the energy and industrials
practice at Gerson Lehrman
Group since October 2010.
Alex Pascal ’07 married
Amy Born in October 2010
in Washington, D.C. They
recently moved to New York
City, where Pascal is a policy
adviser to Susan Rice, U.S.
permanent representative to
the United Nations. They are
enjoying all that New York
has to offer and look forward
to the hospitality of SAIS
friends around the world in
the coming year.
Caroline Poeschl ’07
is pursuing a Ph.D. in
international development
at the London School of
Economics.
Jonathan P. Raviv JHU
’06, ’07 moved back to New
York City from Washington,
D.C., in March, and is now
covering aerospace and
defense stocks for Citi.
In October Caspar G.
Schauseil B’06, ’07 completed
his Ph.D. in Hamburg
at Bauhaus Research School,
in collaboration with Hamburg
Media School. He will
soon be moving to Berlin to
begin a new job. His professional
focus lies in mergers
and aquisitions, media economics,
and new business
models for digital media and
the printing industry.
Cenk Sidar B’06, ’07
resides in Fairfax, Va., with
his wife, Jessica. He has
managed a Washington,
D.C.-based strategic advisory
and research firm, Sidar
Global Advisors, since January
2009.
Kiran Nichani Srivastava
B’06, ’07 lives and works
in Washington, D.C., as an
associate with Booz Allen
Hamilton in the company’s
energy practice. She gave
birth to a baby boy in February
2011.
In October 2009, George
Turner B’06, ’07 became
the head of the Westminster
office of Simon Hughes MP,
in the House of Commons.
He lives in London.

for the U.N. Department of
Economic and Social Affairs
